I've been teaching and serving life and love on this path ever since - in a variety of places across North America - its been 3 decades now and I feel like I’m more confident and curious than ever about yoga and its incredible benefits to spiritual health.
After realizing that I really wanted a formal certificate from a Yoga Alliance accredited program, in1999/2000 I took a formal 200 hour YTT. That program was great, but I felt that it was based mostly in the first three limbs of yoga. It wasn’t completely what I was looking for, but it led me to meeting wonderful people and like minds and took me deeper onto the path of yoga.
Teaching awhile and still being drawn to learning from YJ :), I saw a new advertisement for a “Home Study YTT 200” accredited with YA, offered by a Temple in Chicago. I thought that I might learn the spiritual side of yoga in this realm. Their requirements said all the study and practices could be done from home and you also needed to join them for four in-person retreats to receive contact hours with the lead teachers etc.– a 6 hour drive was do-able. That year, 2001, my relationship with The Temple of Kriya Yoga began. It was a spiritual homecoming.
I continued to take nearly every course they offered, completing my full Yoga Seminary Training in 2009.
In addition to the training I received at the Temple of Kriya Yoga, I have completed many other certificate trainings and Continued Education Courses over the process of my career beyond those three 200 hour programs. I have logged an additional 1332 advanced training hours for YA standings and 1100 IAYT credited hours of training in my specialty as of Dec. 2023.
That’s approximately 3432 hours of CE training, over three decades of personal practice and teaching that give me the expertise I share with you!
I was ordained as Swami Swarupananda in a beautiful ceremony, by my Parham Guru and beloved teacher, a true guru, Sri Goswami Kriyananda. I am a Swami (the word swami means “one who is the master of her own self” but may be better known as a Yogic Priestess), and lineage holder in the Kriya Yoga Traditions. Kriya Yoga was brought to the west by Paramahansa Yogananda. This lineage was passed down to me through Yogananda's direct link via Sri Shellyji (Timmer), Goswami Kriyanandaji and Swami Enoch Dasa Giri.
My Spiritual name is Swarupananda: “she who finds bliss in knowing her true nature”. Most of my students know me by and refer to me as Swami Lisa, and some call me Swamiji as a term of endearment. I do not have a preference as to which name you use, my mother liked Lisa Dawn and still calls me that. I am not attached to any name, it is my vibration in which I hope you recognize me by and remember.
In the Kriya lineage of yoga, a Priest’s Swami name points to their Dharma, into which they are called to serve/teach, in order to "achieve the enlightened state of their souls return to bliss and transcend the suffering of human experience".
I am called to serve others in remembering and nurturing their True Nature.
I am also a Dasa, “One who is called to serve”. My name does not hold Dasa in it, however for years I studied with another Kriya Yoga lineage holder who was my guru, Swami Enoch Dasa Giri. My intrigue to become learned through this teacher was due to the nature of service which I recognized in his soul. In my process of being a kriya yoga disciple I learned a great deal; gaining yogic discipline and experiencing profound yoga practices like sleep fasting, dream kriya, studying Astrology and symbolism, Pranayama, Kriya yoga discipline guidance in Holy Kriya’s, Mantra, Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga and varieties of Meditation. I dove into and contemplated the writings of Lau Tsu, and other great mystics. I mastered how to serve a satsang and support a beloved teacher. Then, ultimately, how to support and show up for mySelf and how to know a true guru from a really great teacher.
In Kriya Yoga Seminary I studied Kriya Yoga as well as the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, Yoga Sutras, Advanced Kriya Pranayams, Meditation, Dream Yoga, Symbolism, Astrology, the Laws of Karma, Sanskrit, World Religions, Mysticism, Hatha Yoga, Spiritual Guidance, Rituals, Ceremonies and Pastoral Care.
In 2010, I opened a Yoga Studio and Wellness Center "Spirit of the Lake Yoga and Wellness" in a small boutique lake town. I sold it in 2015 to a student who went through one of my 200 Hour YTT's, and it still operates today under the same name with the same beautiful owner and right hand staff.
In my "yoga career" I've learned a lot about curriculum development and execution, and nurturing relationships with community, staff, students and clients, and most importantly serving my dharma by working smarter instead of harder. I continue to share this knowledge with great insight.
In 2012 I began down a path with the yoga therapy school Inner Peace Yoga Therapy. First as a student, so that I could even better serve my community in specific yoga therapeutics in a bio/psycho/social/spiritual evidence driven capacity. And in 2014 accepted a job as a program assistant and group facilitator. My roles with IPYT have changed over the years ranging from support faculty, to faculty assistant, to lead faculty when I am teaching and certifying students Pain Care Aware. And from program mentoring to running my own mentorship in Meditation and Spiritual Health. One thing has remained constant and true over my years with IPYT, I absolutely LOVE the students and faculty! I still wear many hats with Inner Peace Yoga Therapy and I always get so much from the opportunity to serve in every role I have. I am proud to bring this program to you based on the work I do with IPYT School.
In 2016 I moved to Canada and my work focused mostly on Pain Care Yoga. Here I developed curriculum along with the expertise of my partner Neil Pearson, called Pain Care Aware, for yoga therapists, LHCP and movement professionals working with people with chronic pain. My role in PCA has always been about sharing the psycho/emotional/spiritual side of suffering and how to best use yoga as a skill for living well - even when life is hard. I also live with fibromyalgia and persistent pain, so I know first hand how important and crucial the role of Spiritual Health is when overcoming our personal suffering.
Throughout all of these years, my personal practice has changed and morphed. The life force of my practice nourishes my soul and has sustained me with ebbs and flows - even some little eddies, occasional droughts/doubts and many, many inspirational floods. But three things remain constant and foundational for me as a result; Remembering my unique essence of spirit, Meditation, and Connection to something greater than myself.
I currently live on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada with my beloved, wise and handsome husband Neil, and our sweet girl doggo, Millie. Between us we have four amazing adult children and a bonus DIL - spread out from MN to CO to right here in beautiful British Columbia - and one absolutely adorable grand daughter, Annabelle, who is growing up in Tofino (lucky little girl!).
I feel my greatest calling in service to others is in helping them help themselves in obtaining greater spiritual health. With my life experiences and privileged education, alongside nearly 20,000 hours of teaching and three decades of mentoring, I am ready and confident to work with you.
In dharma of remembering our True Nature,
Swami Swarupananda
